Licking County and several towns and cities became the first in Ohio to be recognized as official POW/MIA county and cities.
The program is sponsored by the POW/MIA Museum in Jefferson Barracks, Missouri, working on creating awareness in communities by applying for status as official POW/MIA counties and cities.
In addition to Newark, mayors from Alexandria, Buckeye Lake, Granville, Gratiot, Hanover, Heath, Hebron, Johnstown, Kirkersville, Pataskala, Reynoldsburg, St. Louisville and Utica all agreed to participate. On Friday, they were presented with signs and proclamations to be displayed in their towns. And through extensive research by the library, the list of county POWs/MIA, whose bodies were never recovered, grew to 35.
